Former Los Angeles Dodgers baseball player interpreter Shohei Ohtani could face 30 years in prison for stealing $16 million from the athlete, Yahoo reports.

Ippei Mizuhara has worked as Otani`s translator since 2018. The prosecutor claims that Mizuhara actually served as the baseball player`s manager.

According to the investigation, the translator helped Ohtani open a bank account into which the athlete`s salary was received. After gaining access to the account, Mizuhara stole $16 million and lost it on bets.

For betting, the translator used an account registered in the name of the athlete. Mizuhara also posed as Otani to get bank employees to approve bank transfers.

The baseball player learned about the theft of funds only when he was accused of illegal betting. Otani himself told investigators that he had never made a bet in his life.

The translator faces up to 30 years in prison for financial fraud.
